Common Questions (FAQ) & Getting Started Guides

What is Storie Cloud?

We built Storie Cloud initially to support our own need to process and stream videos in our mobile app Storie. What we discovered was that putting together a great video experience for our users was really, really complicated and took up a lot of time. So we thought, if we found it useful, then other app builders would feel the same way, so we released our full platform for managing, transcoding, analysing and distributing video.

We aim to make adding video to your own mobile product as simple as possible, so you can get on with the most important part of building your apps - the product itself.

What makes Storie Cloud different to other similar video transcoding APIs?

Most video transcoding APIs that are currently available are primarily focussed on web-first functionality. Whereas our focus is purely mobile. Everything we design is built with mobile in mind. Our set of mobile SDKs are tightly integrated into our cloud infrastructure and are designed to work seamlessly. We've also worked on adding very powerful APIs for producing and analysing video.

Why can't I just use plain .mov and .mp4 files in my app?

There is no reason you can't, but your user experience for users on slower internet connections is going to be sub-optimal. We've fixed this by using adaptive-bitrate video streaming. In nutshell, the quality of the video sent to a user's mobile device is going to adapt to their network connection speed automatically.

What sort of apps is the Storie Cloud designed for?

Storie Cloud is designed for any app that needs a video delivery mechanism. If you would like to give your users a way to send a video to another user or your backend service or a 3rd party service, or even just be able to store their videos in the cloud, the Storie Cloud has been designed specifically for this purpose.

Can I test the Storie Cloud for free?

Yes you can. We want you to be able to see the power of Storie Cloud yourself. That being said, there are certain features that we need to charge for in order to cover our own infrastructure costs. We have put together a very flexible easy to understand guide on how much these features will cost you. But currently, while Storie is in beta development, it is completely free.

How safe is my user's data on Storie Cloud?

We have a 100% redundant failover system in place. Our infrastructure uses Google Cloud Storage and all of the data stored in Storie Cloud is archived and backed up to their Nearline service. For more information you can view the Google Cloud Storage Nearline features. What you get with Nearline, you get with Storie Cloud.

I need a feature that Storie Cloud doesn't support, what do I do?

Let us know, we are always open to feedback and feature requests. In some cases, we may even have the feature your looking for in private beta, which we can enable on your account.

What platforms does the Storie Cloud support?

Since the Storie Cloud is an web-based API, we are able to support any platform. We currently have SDKs that communicate with this API for iOS only, with an Android and Javascript version ready for release in the fall of 2016. Feel free to contact us if you would like to put together your SDK in the interim and we will help out.
